| Issues with fire safety shortcuts, reducing flood damage in homes & stylish facade transformation Hello! This week's guest article comes from Richard White, Commercial Director at Sertus - he takes a look at why taking fire safety shortcuts in building design can cause huge issues later down the line; a very informative article. Elsewhere, Delta Membranes has explored measures and practices to reduce flood damage in homes, Renderplas has helped to deliver a stylish facade transformation to a shopping centre in Lincoln, and Stannah has ensured the facilities at the historic Whitby Abbey will benefit from a lift modernisation - read about all of those below! GUEST ARTICLE: The hidden human cost of fire safety shortcuts in building design Fire safety often framed as a matter of compliance, ensuring that codes are met, boxes are ticked and relevant certificates are issued. Whilst all of this is true, in building design, the decisions that play a key role in shaping fire safety outcomes occur much earlier in the process. When fire safety isn’t integrated in the concept stage it becomes a constraint rather than a core design principle, and this is when shortcuts can often be taken to get the job done on time, rather than on specification. While these decisions may reduce upfront costs or speed up construction, in the long term, these changes can carry very real human costs. Any changes made to the original fire and smoke safety design can completely alter how fire and smoke behave in the event of a real fire, leading to potentially grave consequences. Richard White, Commercial Director at Sertus, takes a closer look at why taking safety shortcuts in building design can cause huge issues later down the line... |
